The Casper features something called Zoned Support in its second layer. Basically, this is a layer of memory foam that is firmer toward the center and the head and foot of the mattress. The firmer zone provides great lumbar support, while the softer zones provide more comfort. This design is intended to keep you well-aligned in all three sleeping positions.

Casper also offers other models with more advanced Zoned Support. If you want something a bit plusher with solid lumbar support, the Casper Nova Hybrid could be a better fit. If you want the highest-end mattress possible, the Casper Wave Hybrid will be the way to go.

Best Cooling Mattress
Birch

There’s nothing fun about waking up hot and sweaty, but that’s where the Birch by Helix mattress comes in. It is the best king-size cooling mattress that we have come across. The Birch is a latex hybrid mattress that features individually-wrapped coils, latex, wool, and cotton. These are all breathable materials that really allow air to flow through the mattress. Unlike memory foam, latex foam won’t trap a significant amount of heat, so you should be sleeping calmly and cool all night.

Being a latex hybrid, the Birch is going to work well if you want an organic mattress. The Talalay latex, cotton, and wool are naturally sourced and free of harmful chemicals. In addition, the mattress adheres to the highest organic standards, meaning this is a great eco-friendly option.

The Birch is on the firmer end and should work well if you are a back sleeper or stomach sleeper. However, if you want something plusher, you can also add the Birch topper. This softens the mattress, making it a better fit for side sleeping.

Best Mattress For Back Sleepers
GhostBed

The GhostBed is an all-foam mattress that features ventilated latex, gel memory foam, and base support foam. This design makes the GhostBed feel a bit firmer-than-average. While firmer mattresses might feel too firm for some back sleepers, this shouldn’t be an issue with the GhostBed. The latex foam should let your hips sink just the right amount while the mattress keeps you properly supported.

Like other latex mattresses, the GhostBed is also a great match for hot sleepers. Latex foam is more breathable than memory foam and won’t trap so much heat. Also, the memory foam layer in the GhostBed features gel to keep you sleeping cool at night.

For a latex mattress, the GhostBed is a great value. With discounts, a king-size GhostBed is just over $1,100. Natural latex mattresses cost much more, but GhostBed’s use of synthetic latex allows them to price their mattress much lower.

What Makes The GhostBed Stand Out?

What Are The Benefits Of A King Size Mattress?

If you’re reading this, then you’re probably intrigued by the thought of sleeping on a king-size mattress (or maybe you’re already a king-size devotee!). Many people are, but the heftier price tag often makes them ponder whether a king is really worth the cost. To answer this question, it’s helpful to know what you’re getting for the added price. Here’s a quick run-down of the benefits of a king-size mattress.

They offer loads of space. This won’t come as a surprise: King-size mattresses are big. A standard king-size mattress measures 76 by 80 inches, or approximately 6.3 by 6.6 feet. This means there’s tons of room for sleepers to stretch out and get comfy in every sleep position.

There’s room for larger people. Taller and/or heavier people sometimes feel cramped on smaller mattresses. A king-size bed should provide more room for people of all body shapes and sizes to sleep comfortably.

There’s room for couples. If you share your bed with a partner, a king-size mattress offers more space for both of you to stretch out and find the sleep position that feels most comfortable—without kicking, pushing, pulling away blankets, or otherwise disturbing your partner. See our best mattresses for couples for some great options.

There’s room for the whole family. If you have kids or pets who like to climb into bed with you, then a king-size mattress can accommodate more people much more comfortably than a smaller bed.

They create spatial balance. If you have a large bedroom, a king-size mattress can help fill the space so the room feels more balanced. In contrast, placing a small bed in an enormous room can make the room feel imbalanced and sparse.

They create a grand look. Many people love the grand look of a king-size mattress and choose a larger bed for aesthetic reasons.

What Are The Cons Of A King-Size Mattress?

While king-size beds offer a lot of benefits, they can also come with some downsides. Here’s a quick overview of the cons of a king.

They take up a lot of space. While bigness is one of the primary benefits of a king-size mattress, it can also be a downside. If you have a small bedroom, a king bed can overtake the room—or it may not fit at all.

They’re hard to move. Because king-size beds are so large, they’re also extra heavy. This means it can be difficult to transport them to your home and between rooms.

They’re costly. No matter the mattress brand in question, king-size mattresses are more costly than smaller sizes. For some people, buying a king-size bed could stretch their budget or be out of reach financially.

They may not look good in certain spaces. Cramming a king-size mattress into a space that’s too small to adequately accommodate it can throw off the visual balance of a room and make it feel more cramped. This is purely a matter of design preferences, of course, but it’s something to consider.

How To Choose The Best King-Size Mattress

Alright, so you’ve decided that a king-size mattress is right for you. You’ve ruled out a queen-size bed. (If you haven’t, read on below!) You’ve determined which type of mattress and which mattress materials best suits your needs. (More on that below, too!) But before you make a king mattress purchase, there are still a few more elements to consider. Here are some important factors to think about as you choose the best king-size mattress for you.

Sleeping position. This is one of the most important things to consider when you’re purchasing any kind of mattress, including a king-size bed. If you’re a back sleeper, a blend of pressure relief and spinal support is usually best (think medium-firm). Side sleepers require softer, more pressure-relieving beds; stomach sleepers require extra-supportive beds; and combination sleepers need a mattress that helps them feel comfortable and supported in multiple positions.

Body type. Your body weight and height can have a big influence on the type of mattress that best suits your needs. For instance, extra-tall people might prefer the extra length of a California king, heavier-weight people will probably require a more supportive king mattress in the form of an innerspring or hybrid, and so on.

Firmness and pressure relief. If you’re thinking about your preferred sleeping position(s) and body type, this will prompt you to think about the appropriate firmness and the level of pressure relief that you need from a mattress. As noted above, back sleepers tend to require a medium-firm mattress, side sleepers usually feel best on a softer mattress, and stomach sleepers generally need a firmer mattress.

Temperature regulation. If you tend to sleep hot, make sure to prioritize a mattress that sleeps cool. As a general rule, all-foam beds sleep hotter than innerspring, latex, and hybrid mattresses. Some mattresses include design features for the express purpose of sleeping cool, while others don’t. Learn more in our roundup of best cooling mattresses.

Number of sleepers. If you sleep alone, then skip this step. But if you plan to share your king-size mattress with a partner, it’s important to consider how they’ll feel on the bed too. Think about their preferred sleeping position, their body type, whether they’re prone to sleeping hot, and so on. Make sure you find a mattress that suits both of your needs to ensure you’re both able to sleep soundly for years to come.

Durability. Since king-size mattresses are usually a big financial investment, most people want to ensure that investment will last for a long time. This is why it’s important to look for a mattress that’s made with high-quality, long-lasting materials, such as sturdy coils, durable latex, and/or high-density foams. See our best mattresses that won’t sag for some durable options.

Edge support. If you share your mattress with a sleeping partner, then edge support is especially important. Strong edge support enables you both to utilize the full surface of the mattress, so you can enjoy all the extra space that you’re paying for with a king-size bed. As a general rule, innerspring, latex, and hybrid mattresses tend to offer stronger edge support than all-foam beds.

Company policies. If you’re buying a new mattress, it’s a good idea to purchase from a company that offers a sleep trial. This way, you can test out the mattress at home before committing to it long-term. Also consider the brand’s return, exchange, and refund policies so you don’t encounter any unpleasant surprises down the road.

Budget. This is an important factor to consider no matter which size mattress you’re buying. Know your budget before you start shopping so you don’t find the mattress of your dreams only to discover that it’s beyond your price point. Many mattresses list their prices based on smaller sizes first, so make sure you select “king” when you’re price shopping.

The Different Types Of King-Size Mattresses

When people picture a king-size bed, they typically imagine a… big bed. But there are actually many varieties under the “king mattress” umbrella. Here’s a quick overview of the different types of king mattresses.

King Mattress

In the mattress world, this term refers to a standard king-size mattress, which gives sleepers an extra 16 inches of width compared to a queen-size bed. It measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. That’s the same width and length that you’d get if you pushed two twin XL mattresses together.

California King

A California king is even longer than a standard king. It’s also a little narrower. It clocks in at 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. The extra length means California king mattresses are especially well suited to tall people.

Eastern King Mattress

This term is used interchangeably with “king mattress.” It refers to a mattress that’s the same size as a standard king, or 76 by 80 inches.

Split King

As the name suggests, a split king is a mattress that’s divided (or “split”) into two pieces. Each piece is approximately the size of a twin mattress. Many couples enjoy sleeping on a split king because they’re able to customize each side to their personal preferences. Split king mattresses are sometimes referred to as dual king beds.

How To Decide Between A King Vs. Queen Mattress

If you’re considering a king-size mattress, then odds are good that you’ve also taken a gander at queen-size beds. Many people find themselves trying to decide between these two sizes. Here are some factors that can help influence your decision.

Bedroom size. This is the quickest way to determine whether a king or a queen-size mattress might be right for your needs. When you take measurements, don’t just think about the mattress. It’s also important to consider how much room you’ll have for a bed frame, side tables, dog beds, dressers, general floor space, and so on. If you utilize a wheelchair or other mobility device, make sure there’s plenty of room for you to maneuver.

Sleeping situation. If you share a bed with a partner, pet, and/or child, it could be a good idea to upgrade from a queen-size mattress to a king. If you sleep alone, then you might find ample space on a queen.

Body type. Taller and/or larger people often prefer having a more spacious mattress in the form of a king-size bed. The same goes for couples wherein both partners are on the taller and/or larger side.

Design preferences. Finally, it’s helpful to consider your aesthetic preferences. Do you like the grand impression made by a king-size bed? Do you prefer your bed to take up less space in the bedroom? Do you have your eye on a specific bed frame that’s only available in one size? The answers to these and other design questions will inform your decision between a king and queen mattress.

Who Should Get A King Mattress?

People with larger bedrooms

People who share a bed with a partner, child, or pet
Tall and/or large people
People for whom budget is no issue

Who Should Get A Queen Mattress?

People with smaller bedrooms
People who sleep alone
Petite people
People who are looking to save some money

The Best Mattress Types For A King-Size Bed

Once you’ve decided that a king is the best mattress size for you, you might be eager to go out and purchase a big mattress. But there’s still one key decision to make: Which mattress type is best? There’s no singular best king mattress type, but there will be a mattress type that best suits your needs. Here’s a quick overview of the different types of mattresses you’ll encounter while hunting for a king bed, plus some of their pros and cons.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is a popular material because it generally offers a lot of pressure relief, contours the body in ways that promote comfort, and has a slow-moving response to pressure. Often, memory foam mattresses layer this material over a base made of high-density polyfoam or (in the case of memory foam hybrids) supportive coils.

Because memory foam tends to be very pressure-relieving, it’s especially popular among side sleepers. It also appeals to folks who enjoy sinking into their mattress (as opposed to sleeping on top of it), and it’s a great option for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by each other’s movements during the night. This material is not without its downsides, however. It’s sometimes too soft to adequately support back and stomach sleepers, it can make it a touch difficult to move around and change positions, and it’s known for trapping heat. These issues can be alleviated, but it all comes down to the construction of a specific mattress.

Innerspring

As you can probably guess from the name, innerspring mattresses use springs (aka coils) in their construction. The coils tend to create a bouncy, responsive, and supportive feel. Mattresses that incorporate coils often sleep relatively cool, because the coils make space for air to circulate throughout the center of the mattress.

Given that innerspring mattresses tend to be supportive beds, they’re often well suited to back and stomach sleepers. When paired with a plusher pillow-top, they could also be a sound option for side sleepers. Some possible downsides? They might not be a great match for people who enjoy sinking into their mattress (as opposed to sleeping on top of it), and they can also be pricier than all-foam beds.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses generally offer the best of both a foam mattress and an innerspring bed. While every hybrid is different, they always layer a comfort layer over coils. Oftentimes, that comfort layer will be made of memory foam. In some cases, it will be made from polyfoam, latex, or another material.

Hybrids are especially well suited to people who want the pressure relief of foam without sinking into their mattress. They tend to be simultaneously pressure-relieving and supportive. One possible downside? Hybrids are often more expensive than an all-foam mattress or an innerspring bed. They also might not suit people who enjoy sinking into their beds and feeling like they’re enveloped in the mattress.

Latex

While all latex mattresses are made with (you guessed it!) latex, there’s room for a lot of variation in this category. Some beds are made with natural latex, while others are made with synthetic latex. Additionally, the latex can be processed in different ways to create a denser or airier material. Most latex mattresses are fairly bouncy and responsive and do a good job of sleeping cool.

Many people love latex because it’s naturally cooling and it can offer pressure relief without making it hard to move around. However, some people (particularly side sleepers) may find that latex mattresses don’t offer enough body contouring for them to sleep comfortably. Latex beds also tend to be more expensive than most other mattress types.

Airbeds

Not to be confused with inflatable air mattresses, airbeds are actually luxury mattresses. They’re made with customizable air chambers that can be adjusted using an app, a remote control, or a manual crank. Adjusting these chambers changes the firmness of the mattress. This means you can alter the firmness every night depending on how you’re feeling or the position you choose to sleep in.

As you can imagine, the main perk of airbeds is that they’re highly customizable. But that comes at a cost. Airbeds are often very expensive, especially in a king-size. They also tend to have thinner comfort layers, so they might not provide enough pressure relief for folks who enjoy a plusher feel.
